			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>According to a recent investigation by the <a href="http://equalrightscenter.org/publications/documents/FINALCOPY_000.pdf" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/equalrightscenter.org');">Equal Rights Center</a>, victims of domestic violence in Washington D.C. often face discrimination when seeking rental housing. One year ago a law was passed in the District to protect victims from housing discrimination.</p>
<p>The study revealed 65 percent of victims who sought housing in the District were either denied or offered harmful conditions to get the apartment.</p>
<p>Advocates say the leading cause of homelessness among women in the U.S. is domestic-violence.</p>

This future is fast approaching as the cost of legal services exceeds the budgets of most families. Unfortunately, we don&#8217;t have a system that works especially well for non-lawyers. The financial realities of the situation will eventually prevail and lawyers will be have a smaller and smaller role in the family courts according to <a href="http://law21.ca/about/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/law21.ca');">Jordan Furlong</a>, Editor-in-Chief of National magazine at the Canadian Bar Association.</p>

Allen Li, associate director of the <a href="http://rand.org/labor/population/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/rand.org');">Population Research Center at the RAND Corporation</a> in Santa Monica, California, says it depends on the individual marriages and the family. </p>
<p>Though Li&#8217;s findings contrast with a lot of research on the effects divorce has on children. Some argue that <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2008-04-24-divorce-kids-behavior_N.htm" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.usatoday.com');">Li is controlling </a>so many things in his study that he is literally causing the effects of divorce to disappear.</p>
