Domestic Violence Victims Face Discrimination

According to a recent investigation by the Equal Rights Center, victims of domestic violence in Washington D.C. often face discrimination when seeking rental housing. One year ago a law was passed in the District to protect victims from housing discrimination.

The study revealed 65 percent of victims who sought housing in the District were either denied or offered harmful conditions to get the apartment.

Advocates say the leading cause of homelessness among women in the U.S. is domestic-violence.

Some experts are concluding that divorce is neither good nor bad. Allen Li, associate director of the Population Research Center at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California, says it depends on the individual marriages and the family.

Though Li’s findings contrast with a lot of research on the effects divorce has on children. Some argue that Li is controlling so many things in his study that he is literally causing the effects of divorce to disappear.

New Child Support Plan to Reduce Overcrowded Jails

A new child support plan in Virginia will give deadbeat parents a second chance to stay out of jail while also saving the state jail costs.

In 2007, 7,000 deadbeat parents were jailed with the average sentence lasting about 6 months.

State officials say that most child support delinquents don’t need jail time, but rather pressure from the court to pay up.

Domestic Violence in the Workplace

In an effort to reduce domestic violence in the workplace in Ohio, a new executive order has been put into action by Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland.

The new order is called the Barbara Warner Workplace Domestic Violence Policy, named after an employee of the Ohio Department of Health who was killed in 1997 by her husband.
